New Layout

Yeah, I probably should have been studying, but I needed a creativity break, and plus the one-column layout was getting unwieldy. So, I've re-designed Reappropriate with a two-column layout plus a really awesome header area that includes most of the relevant information for repeat visitors. A prize to whoever can identify the character in this image. My guess is only Ragnell will get it.

It's Nico from Runaways, which fits with "version 2.0 :: Runaway" in your header there.

Excellent layout, Jenn. Very user friendly with the 2nd column and new posts/ comments sections up top.

You know, you've got real skill at this. Good job!

Jenn: Runaways is big business nowadays, particularly with Whedon coming on to write the series. All the cool kids like it :)

Ragnell: :-P

Cool new layout and like the Nico at the top! I had to choose a new layout as well because, as you know, my permanent links weren't working on IE. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything with 3 columns that seemed to work. I had been testing all day. But, your layout is beeyootimus.

Nah, that's Nico Minoru, all right, the girl whose wardrobe is the envy of all the other homeless superheroes.
That was a gorgeous series of covers. I remember really liking this one.

Nice job, Jenn! I really love how the "previous posts" and "recent comments" are right at the top. :)

wow, i guess i was totally wrong about runaways being too obscure. i thought for sure that the image at this header was going to be too cropped to be recognizable, but you guys are too good!!

david: i didn't hear whedon was coming on to write the series. then again, female leader of a rag-tag group of superheroes? i'm not too surprised.

loren: hmmm, yeah, your old layout was acting up. i've gotta go see the new one!

little light: yeah -- i really liked those covers too. i actually really liked one of the other ones better than this one, but sadly, i was trying to find a nice picture of an asian american superheroine.

carmen: thanks! actually, that was the main reason i switched over -- i wanted to make things easier to skim and the one column was getting way too unwieldy.

Thanks everyone! I've fixed a bug I found in Firefox, so anyone who was having problems viewing the site with that browser should notice that everything is where it should be.

The layout is still untested in Safari and Netscape.

Snazzy! The new layout looks great. I love using the top space for info - I've never seen it done like that before. (And I never would have gotten who the character was.)

Thanks, Amp! I was reading a post somewhere about "unconventional" blog layouts that were moving away from two- or three-column layouts and I tried to imagine how one could come up with a layout that was able to adapt to the dynamic sizes of blog content and wasn't columnar.

I couldn't figure out how to do it without drop down menus for most of the elements needed for a blog (and how much would that suck, huh?), but it occurred to me that the sizes of the previous posts and recent comments bars remain relatively fixed because you can set a fixed number of entries to display at any time, and most post-titles are similar in length. So, I thought I'd try a non-columnar component to an otherwise conventionally-laid out blog and see what happens.

(plus, my last layout had some weird coding quirks that evolved over the course of time as I was working out how to adapt Blogger for stylesheets, and it was an opportunity to correct how screwed up the coding had become.)

I'm glad you liked it!!

Love the new layout. One question, though, is there any way that you can make it full screen? Your posts are kind of hard to read when they're so small...

hmmm... are they really small? the layout is designed to still fit the screen on 800x600... I'll think about ways to adapt the code to see if I can make it pull to full-screen, but I'm not too sure that I can w/out disrupting the look of the layout...

Actually, I remember while runaways/runaways 2 wasn't very popular, it was well received.

It would require a bit of image editing so that you could have the right part of the image be a repeating graphic. Then it's a matter of making the table or div 100% and tweaking anything that seems out of balance on a larger screen.

If you want, I can help you with the image part and the HTML (though if Blogger uses divs it may be a bit more complex; I had to go with a combo table/div layout for Shrub).

Yeah, the coding wasn't a problem, it was trying to decide how to chop/edit the header image to make a repeating background that could wrap to a larger resolution while making sure the layout has the same feel.

I'm going to mull over and play with a few different versions of the site to see if I can find a way to code it without completely changing the feel of the layout... thanks for bringing this to my attention! I'll hopefully be able to publish a new version by this time next week if I find something better...
